Showtime Goes Off It’s Meds on Sunday Nights

I adore Diablo Cody, so I’ve been jonesing for her follow-up to last year’s Oscar winner, Juno.

If you like a side of inventive drama with your quirky comedy, check out Showtime’s newest dram-edy. United States of Tara, created and written by last year’s Oscar-winning new comer Diablo Cody, switches gears like Danica Patrick at the Indie 500. Tara’s responsible wife and mom persona rules the roost – until her ghetto-fabulous teenager “T” bursts on the scene, breaks out the weed and invites her fifteen-year old to ditch her homework and go shopping for lip gloss and “slutty outfits that make us look insecure”.  (In the wake of Weeds, the grass is once again always greener at Showtime.) This is what life is like when your otherwise normal mother goes off her meds.  Step-ford supermom, Alice, and hillbilly male, Buck, round out Tara’s crew of alternate personalities. When life stresses Tara out and she can’t cope, the best one for the job steps in and takes over. Why go back on pharmaceuticals that transform her into a zombie when she can call on one of her designated hitters to come in and hit the crisis out of the park? Sounds damn convenient, but it’s not all fun and games for her husband and kids. How do you explain to your friends at school when your mom comes to pick you up dressed like a white-trash trucker, scratching her balls and beats the hell out of your boyfriend? Could be awkward. It’s worth tuning in just to see Toni Collette masterfully play four different characters, complete with distinctive mannerisms and accents. The drama of a family dealing with mental illness will make you sad. The hilarious situations that arise when one woman’s life is lived by four extreme opposite personalities, will make you laugh. By the end of the season opener, I was bi-polar! Does anyone know a producer interested in a show about a manic-depressive Latina that goes off her meds? It’ll be a hit. ¡Te lo juro!
